Triumph of Orthodoxy 2012, Homily

The first week of the Lent passed. As we know the Great Lent is preparing the faithful to the celebration of Easter, The Resurrection of Christ. The Great Lent is happened to be a concise experience of the Church, reflecting the way that a Christian takes towards salvation. Salvation of human being – is an aim of the reality we are living in. The Church reminds us different events on this way, thus last week we remembered the fall of the ancestors and their exile of paradise. Our reality now, the way we live now, started with the disobedience to God – first man ate a prohibited fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Thus a sin came into a world, - all our internal existence changed. If before the fall our life was natural, now there is a possibility to live unnaturally. Death and distortion came into our life.

TRIP TO TAJIKISTAN, part 2

We landed at Dushanbe airport at 4:00 in the morning. In the airport there is a consular section in order to issue visas to foreigners. But it was a flight from St. Petersburg and there are no foreigners on it. Russia and Tajikistan has non visa regulations. The consul was missing, so I had to wait till 9:00 in the morning :-)

TRIP TO TAJIKISTAN part 1

I was born in Tajikistan. We left in 1981 and I didn’t visit it since. I felt ashamed for not visiting it for 30 years, although there was a chance.

THORNY ROAD

My tickets were via Riga, Latvia. I didn’t even know whether my flight will take off because there was a general strike in Greece till 12:00. I received an sms message from my agency that I should call them to check the flight. I was calling and nobody answered. So I went to the airport without any information whether the flight will take off, but everything went on fine, the flight took off, finaly.

However when we approached Riga we were told that the airport is closed because of emergency landing of one of the planes. So we landed in nearby Lithuania. After half an hour we were told that everything is OK, Riga airport is open, so we landed at Riga. Half of the plane were transit passengers and lost their flights, as did I, lost my flight to Dushanbe. In the airport we formed a line to the central office of Air Baltic where everybody received his hotel and tickets for new flights.

The company made a very intricate route for me, after two days I had to fly Riga – St. Petersburg – Dushanbe. So I had one day to spend in Riga.

Actually I was happy because except Tajikistan I could have a walk in European cities.

UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES

Our Abbot and Elder Archimandrite Dionysios was present at the enthronement of Metropolitan Jonah of OCA. Metropolitan asked him to send some monks and nuns from our monasteries in order to develop monastic life in USA. Because of that I even took a release note from Church of Greece to OCA. Recently I visited United States and met Metropolitan. Finally it was decided to start something in Oklahoma. There is no Monastery there, only a small church of Sts. Cyrill and Methodios. But staying and serving there it would be possible to find a place for the Monastery and to build it later on.

It was necessary to come back to Greece, to continue to work upon the monastic constitution, to see who else will come etc.

Few years ago I became a citizen of Greece and now I was called to serve my military service. Before there was a law releasing all clergy of the military service. But now, it’s several years now, there is a new law obliging all citizens to serve. So I am in this category now. According to the law the priest wearing the priest’s clothes, do not cut his beard or hair and serving as a secretary or a car driver.

I have a honor and a blessing to serve exactly in the military unit, where our Elder, Archimandrite Dionysios served in 70’s. There he built a church of 12 Apostles, it is there till now. Now I have some time of vacation, so I could write this note

TURKISH SPOON

One priest, who happens to be a good friend, traveled in Turkey and noticed something worth seeing. On the highways, in the moment of paying tolls, sometimes it’s difficult to reach the collector’s cabin. Therefore some bright Turkish minds thought up to take with them a big wooden spoon in the car, one - one and the half meter long. So when it’s time to pay, you put the money in the spoon and extend it to the cabin. It’s also symbolic - the citizen feeds the state out of a spoon.

This priest bought such a spoon in Turkey. To Greece he came from Cyprus in his car which has a driver’s seat on the right (because of left-hand traffic in Cyprus). So in Greece it was impossible to reach the collector’s cabin which happens to be on the left side of the car.

Then he was enlightened to use the “Turkish spoon”. There was much laughter. The collectors laughed together with the cars on the back. One woman-collector seeing the spoon with money coming to her out of a car window made a sign of cross and said: “My God, I can’t believe it”. But every body’s takes the money and put the receipt and the change to the spoon. Lord bless Fr. George.

Karoulia

I had an occasion to visit Mt. Athos for two days and to meet a friend and a brother monk Athanasios, a superior of the cell of St. Savva the Serbian in Karoulia skete. It was a distinguished experience to visit this place. I visited Mt.Athos several times but those were easily accessed monasteries and cells. Here it was a first time that I had a chance to meet fathers living ascetic life. “The Inner Karoulia” is away even of the world of Mt. Athos, if one could say so. Now there are several monks live there.

ANNIVERSARY

17 of August we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Monastic Tonsure at Great Meteoron, and the 35th anniversary of the Ordination to the Priesthood at Simonos Petras, of our very reverend Elder Archimandrite Dionysios. In the morning a divine liturgy took place. Our ruling bishop, Metropolitan Cyril of Thessaliotida and Fanariofersalon was present as well as other clergy of our diocese, spiritual children of Elder and others. In the evening, in the Monastery of St. George “Karaiskaki” after a service of Vespers an assembly of the brotherhood, sisterhood and spiritual children of the Elder took place.
